Lot Essay
In July 1904 Thorn Prikker sent four drawings from his residence in Vis, Belgium, to H.P. Bremmer with the request to sell them as soon as possible. From the pressure he bears on Bremmer to get rid of them ("verpatsen") for fourty or fifty guilders ("pop"), we may conclude he was in need of money. As Mrs. Bremmer-Beekhuis stated in her manuscript of the annotated letters to Bremmer, he indeed sold two drawings and bought the other two to enlarge his own collection (Manuscript Mrs. Bremmer-Beekhuis, Gemeentearchief, The Hague). The present lot is possibly part of this purchase.
Between 1901 and 1904 Johan Thorn Prikker made several crayon drawings of the surroundings of Vis. In these works, the artist depicted the landscape as a flow of blue, purple-green and yellow lines. He emphasized either a specific light, an atmosphere or a fantasy of colours. Sometimes his fantasy colours result in a flowing movement of circles and lines, that clearly shows the influence of Van Gogh (see: A.B. Loosjes-Terpstra, Moderne kunst in Nederland 1900-1914, Utrecht 1959)
