This unknown sketchbook contains compositional variations done in pencil and watercolour on both sides of the sheets. It was given by Vordemberge-Gildewart to the new owner of his house in Amsterdam before moving to Ulm in 1954.
It is difficult to date the sketchbook precisely. From annotations on the cover like 'Tanzgruppe Ilse Vordemberge', 'Bln' and 'Amsterdam', it seems likely that it was used during the Berlin and Amsterdam period from the mid-twenties to the late thirties.
Several of the compositions are very much related to finished paintings, such as composition K79 from 1934, now in the Haags Gemeentemuseum in The Hague (inv.no. 46-1967). For this composition there are several designs in the sketchbook, all with slight variations.
Most sheets contain several small designs, only one design covers a whole sheet. This sketch has many similarities with painting K24 from 1926, now in Muse National d'Art Moderne, Paris (no. AM 1980-397).
Besides the sketchbook, there is also a drawing in this lot for which Vordemberge-Gildewart used the letter paper of Gruppe K, the artist group founded in 1924, of which Vordemberge-Gildewart was one of the founders. The sketches on this sheet are related to the painting K56 from 1930, now in the Kunsthalle in Basel.

We are grateful to Professor Dietrich Helms for his help in cataloguing this lot. For more information on the artist, please see: Dietrich Helms, Vordemberge-Gildewart, The complete works, Munich 1990
