Lot Essay

Lantoine visited Segou, in south-central French Sudan, after having won a travel grant to French West Africa in 1936. On the Niger river, Segou, which has always been an important trading centre, was the first capital of the Bambara kingdom, which flourished in the 17th and 18th centuries.
