The artist arrived at Chilomba, which Captain Charles Lemaire, head of the scientific mission, called Ka-Bea, on the 12th of November 1898. In his notebook, Dardenne recounts that the water was muddy, his room was invaded by insects of all kinds, the kitchen set on fire, the camp was shaken by a tornado, and hyenas made a terrible noise at night. On the 15th November, he wrote that he had begun a drawing of his house and himself, 'the head of the station dressed like a nougat-seller'. Other scenes of Ka-Bea are in the collection of his works given by the Minister of Colonies to the Muse Royal de l'Afrique Centrale, Tervuren, in 1911.
