Somba tatas Tatas sombas

These massive, storied, tatas of the Somba, who lived in the Atacora mountain chain in north Dahomey, was built for extended family groups of about thirty people. Traditionally, a ladder led up to the roof, but this means of access was later replaced by lateral openings, such as can be seen here.
