The signature indicates that the vase was designed between 1934 and 1940. During this period Buthaud supplied pieces to the American retailer Salmincouri. Already under exclusive contract to the Galrie Rouard since 1928, Buthaud was only able to legally supply works to Salmincouri by developing a new style and by signing them in a different manner. During this period he developed the white crackled glaze which he likened to as 'snakeskin'. His signature J. Doris was inspired by the Greek vase decorator Douris (5th century B.C.) whom Buthaud greatly admired. The Second World War brought to an end the export of the 'J. Doris' ceramics to America. Remaining stock was dispersed locally which explains their occasional appearance in the European art market.
