The oval frame surmounted by an acanthus cresting, hung with tasselled striped drapery, supported below by two putti, on a naturalistically-carved rectangular base and spreading plinth, the back inscribed AL SIG. ANTONIO E. TERRY/IN/SEGNO DI STIMA E RICONOSCENZA/VALENTINO BESAREL/VENEZIA 1887

Lot Essay

Valentino Panciera, dit Besarel, was born in Zoldo in 1829. He trained as a sculptor and worked extensively for the Prince of Wales. Exhibiting at the major International Exhibitions during the second half of the 19th century, he was awarded a gold medal at the 1878 Paris Exposition Universelle.
