Lot Essay

The two-drawered commodes supplied in 1786 by Riesener (d. 1806) for the Versailles apartments designed by the architect R. Mique for Marie-Antoinette, provided the prototype for this Louis XVI style commode (see P. Verlet, Le Mobilier Royal Franais, Paris, 1990, no. 14).

Another example of this model of commode, by the celebrated Parisian bniste Paul Sormani, was sold in these rooms 16 June 1994, lot 197.
