Lot Essay

The present marble well-head, carved with a continuous procession of Bacchic putti, is reminiscent of the style of the Italian sculptor, Cesare Lapini, who excelled in his portrayal of young children.

A marble fountain, signed by Lapini and dated 1888, was offered in these rooms, 30 May 1996, lot 270. A similar well-head, possibly by Lapini, was sold in these rooms, 26 February 1998, lot 201.
