Lot Essay

The inscription refers to the siege of the fortified town of Willemstad by the French under General Dumouriez in the Spring of 1793. Lieutenant-General Karel, Baron van Boetzelaer, Governor of Willemstad, managed to ward off the enemy and brought the siege to an end within three weeks. Since Willemstad is on the south bank of the Hollands Diep the population were able to make their escape by taking to the water.

The signature is probably that of Johannes Christianus Bendorp, a member of the Dordrecht art society 'Pictura'.
