Dating from late 1940s Under the emblem on the box lid is stated: "Manufactured under the supervision of the proprietors of the Punch factory" Today, Macanudo is America's No. 1 Premium hand made cigar. The brand was originally named after President Gerardo Machado of Cuba who governed in the 1920s and 1930s. He was a ruthless politician who was eventually ousted from power but he did of course enjoy his cigars ! In the 1940s the Palicios family of Punch fame set up a factory in Jamacia. The cigars made had to contain local tobacco but, as wrappers cannot be cultivated in Jamaica, they were finished with the finest Cuban leaf. Macanudo was chosen as the brand name for these cigars and they were designed to resemble Punch as closely as possible.
