'This work was probably painted in the summer of 1900 when the painter was staying at the Hotel du Commerce, Cany, near Dieppe. Orpen had gone to Dieppe on the recommendation of William Rothenstein, on a painting expedition accompanied by Albert Rothenstein (later Rutherston) and Charles Conder. Unlike the dissolute Conder's stay in France, Orpen had an extremely productive visit. He produced three pictures of the courtyard of the Hotel and a number of landscapes, in addition to the present work'.
