Lot Essay
'Evening, Tangier typifies many of the small, swift oil on canvas-board sketches executed by Lavery on the rooftops of Tangier (see Evening on the Housetop, Tangier, lot 58). It is likely that in the present view the painter was looking towards Algeciras and the mountains of southern Spain, as in Evening, Tangier (Birmingham Art Gallery). Lavery used small studies of the this kind to note the fugitive effects of cloud and light in an impressionistic manner. Seeing the rich impasto and rhythmic undulations of paint his pleasure in the swiftly changing scene is clearly evident'.
