Hilary Pyle (loc. cit) comments on the present work: 'At a cab-stand, a close-up of the side of a side-car by night. The driver leans over the top, watching three men engaged in a game of cards, their faces lit in a Caravaggio manner by the candle hidden in the corner of the side-car step. Yeats's interest in Daumier at the time is reflected in the way the darkness of the background acts as a foil for the characterful faces of the cabbies'.
