On the Lagan, the main river servicing Luke's native Belfast, was painted in 1933 after the artist's return from studying at the Slade. The work shows the influence of a brief Cezanne-like phase in his style and composition, and was painted when the artist first began to experiment with tempera. Luke was meticulous in his painting technique and the quality is evident in the present work.
