Las tapas de mrmol con grecas negras encierran trompe l'oeil vignettes que muestran la riqueza de las excavaciones arquelogicas. Una mariposa revolotea entre jarrones, lmparas etc, dispuestas sobre un terreno rodeado por flores. En una de ellas una esfinge de prfido acompaa un jarrn etrusco que recuerda al clebre "Hamilton Vase" que se encuentra en el British Museum de Londres y que perteneci a la famosa coleccin del Duque de Hamilton; en la otra, una leona de prfido reposa entre las piezas arquelogicas recreadas en la tapa anterior. Ornamentos como stos aparecen en frontispicio de Antiquits Etrusques, Grecques et Romaines, por F.A. David, Paris, 1785.

A butterfly hovers amongst antique vases, lamps etc., displayed on flowered and parched earth plateaux. On one, a porphyry sphinx accompanies an Etruscan vase recalling the celebrated 'Hamilton' vase now in the British Museum, London, once in the famed collection of the Duke of Hamilton; while a porphyry lioness appears amongst the antiquities portrayed on the other table.
