The ormolu candelabra are designed in the late 18th century Grecian manner, and conceived as festive caryatic maidens bearing triunfal palm-wrapped candlebranches in baskets that, like the hollow-sided "altar" plinths, are comprised of antique-fluted statuary marble wreathed by pearled-ribboned bands.
The antique figure derives from a model that may have been invented in the 1770s by the Roman-based goldsmith Luigi Valadier (d.1785); and corresponds to that of a 1795 candlestick drawing of a "figure bronze gilt & white marble pedestal", that was executed after a design by his son Giuseppe Valadier (d.1817) (see Alvar Gonzalez-Palacios, Il Tempio del Gusto, Milan 1984 vol 11, p.123 fig 265)
Patinated bronze versions of the figure featured on candelabra, with pearl-wreathed marble plinths executed about 1790 by Francesco Righetti; on an 1804 centrepiece executed by Giacomo Raffaelli; and in an 1817 watercolour for a centrepiece conceived by Luigi Righetti (see Palacios, figs 266, 267 and 294)
