The sitter in this portrait has not been identified, but the provenance of an autograph, but unsigned, version in a private collection may be relevant. This was inherited by Mrs William Fitzhugh (1879-1962), who could have inherited it from her family - her great grandfather James Mure (1760-1846) was the second son of William Mure of Caldwell, Baron Mure (d.1778), by coincidence the 3rd Earl of Bute's Scottish agent - or from that of her husband (and first cousin), William Reginald Fitzhugh, whose great grandfather was William Fitzhugh, M.P., of Bannisters, Southampton (1757-1842) (see Burke's Landed Gentry, sub Fitzhugh of Plas Power).
This is one of a number of portraits in which Sawrey Gilpin worked in association with other artists, including, in addition to Barret and Walton, Wheatley and Reinagle.
