Decimus Burton's Ionic Screen on Hyde Park Corner was built after the remodelling of Buckingham Palace in the 1820s. It was intended to be an imposing feature of the drive from the palace to Hyde Park. The carvings on the screen's frieze are by John Frederick Herring Junior. In the distance through the left hand arch of the screen can be seen the outline of Dorchester House, which had been the town house of the Earls of Dorchester, on Park Lane. Also apparent, in the distance through the screen, is the statue of Achilles by Westmacott which was erected in 1822 to commemorate the Duke of Wellington's victories.
