Lot Essay

Queen of Trumps, by Velocipede out of Princess Royal, was foaled in 1832. Bred by Edward Mostyn, she was brilliant on the course but less successful as a broadmare. Her major victories were the Oaks at Epsom, and the St. Leger at Doncaster. She is recorded as having been attacked by a bulldog during a race later in the week of her Leger win and as having consequently swerved, with the result that she was beaten - her only defeat in three seasons of racing. The jockey in this picture is probably Tommy Lye.
