Lot Essay

Samuel Richard Block (for whom see the previous lot) married Margaret Orr, daughter of William Orr of Bridgeton, Kincardineshire, as his second wife, in 1835, two years after the death of his first wife Agnes. Agnes Block his only daughter from his first marriage was born in 1833 at Muswell Hill. She married Thomas Saumarez of Jersey who came from the distinguished naval family from Guernsey. Her husband followed a naval career and saw much active service in South America and China. He was eventually appointed an Admiral in 1886. She died at St. Helier, Jersey, in 1866. He died at Margate in 1903 (for his obituary see The Times 23 January 1903).
