With later top, the aprons pierced with a triform Gothic motif, the ends extending to feet and with butressed edges, one frieze branded 'IS'

Dr. Charles Tracy, English Medieval Furniture and Woodwork, Victoria and Albert Museum, London 1988, p.197, pl.125, illustrates a stool in the Victoria and Albert Museum which has a similar pierced apron.

Lot Essay

This stool appears to be constructed of elements from two separate stools, the aprons being associated to the uprights. The more conventional construction would be for the aprons to rest on the buttressed edges of the uprights.
