A saddled chesnut hunter tethered to a post, the entrance to stables beyond

Thomas Beach, was essentially a portraitist, and the present picture is a highly unusual example of his work. Beach was born at Milton Abbas, Dorset and later studied at St. Martin's Lane Academy and with Reynolds between 1760 and 1762. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, with a London address, between 1785 and 1790 and again in 1797, although he was mostly based in Bath.
