Ferneley had painted a portrait of Master Bruce Campbell with two beagles for Lady Tamworth at Staunton Harold which is recorded as no. 1 in the account books and illustrated opposite page 16 - at that time in the possession of Major H. Campbell of Heyford. Paget writes (op. cit., p. 16) 'This boy [later Sir Hugh Bruce Campbell] in after years ordered at different times three pictures, which fortunately still remain in the family'. The huntsman in the present picture is, by family tradition, identified as John Campbell of Saddell Castle.
