Harkaway, a chestnut colt by Economist out of a mare by Nablockish, was bred in Ireland by Joseph, 4th Earl of Milltown, of Russborough, in 1834. His large stride and great speed enabled him to win twenty-five of the thirty-eight races in which he started.
Between 1837 and 1838 Harkaway won eleven races in Ireland including the Royal Whip, in which he beat Mr. Osborne's Maria and Captain Stanley's Blackfoot. After winning the second class of the Madrid Stakes at the Curragh in 1837, he was sold to Mr. Ferguson, and was sent to England in 1838. That year he won the Cup at Goodwood, ridden by Wakefield, beating Lord Exeter's Adrian and Mr. Worrall's Dormouse. He also won the Cup at Wolverhampton, ridden by Calloway, beating Mr. Bowes's Epirus, and The Queen's Plate, at Doncaster, again with Calloway up, beating the Marquess of Westminster's Cardinal Puff. He was no less successful the following year, beating Mr. Dixon's Hyllus, Mr. Craven's Deception, Mr. Parker's The Doctor and Mr. Bowes's Epirus to win the Cup of 1300 at Goodwood in one of the fastest races on record. In the same year at the Curragh, Harkaway won the Lord Lieutenant's Plate of one Hundred guineas beating Mr. Kennedy's Fairy Queen. After an exciting and successful career Harkaway retired from the Turf in 1841.
