A pointer on a moor

Herring grew up in London before moving to Doncaster in 1814. He was initially a self-taught artist painting inn signs and coach panels while working as a night coachman in York and Doncaster. In 1815 he was commissioned by The Doncaster Gazette to sketch annually the winner of the St. Leger, to be published as engravings. While living in Doncaster Herring also received numerous commissions from Yorkshire sportsmen for hunting and coaching scenes. In 1830 Herring left Doncaster for Newmarket, where he spent three years before moving to London. Herring's later career was prosperous and he was appointed Animal Painter to the Duchess of Kent and included Queen Victoria as one of his patrons.
