Lot Essay

Ansdell painted several works with this title. In the first, executed in 1851 and exhibited at the Royal Academy of that year (no. 623), the background was painted by Thomas Creswick. The present painting was exhibited at the R.A. in 1868 (no. 489) and the third was exhibited at the R.A. in 1871 (no. 290). In 1868, the Art Journal commented 'R. Ansdell, A.R.A., perhaps the hardest worker of the Academy, produces five pictures, powerful and effective, after his pronounced manner.'

We are grateful to Peter Ansdell for his help in preparing this catalogue entry.
