The Newcastle Gold Cup of 1825 was won by the Duke of Leeds' four year old colt Blue-beard. Only two horses ran the four mile course and Blue-beard was the 3 to 1 on favourite. This was very unusual as the Newcastle Gold Cup, during the early 19th century, was one of the most highly contested races and many great horses of the period took part.
