Frank Paton and Cecil Cutler collaborated on a commission to produce a painting to present to Lord Henry, 18th Baron Willoughby de Broke, on his retirement as master of the Warwickshire Hunt.
Cutler, a portrait painter who specialised in watercolours, painted the figure of Lord Henry, and Paton, who was predominantly an animal painter, completed the picture by painting the hunter and hounds. The painting was exhibited at the Baird-Carter Gallery on Jermyn Street in July 1900.
The present watercolour, which also bears the label of the Baird-Carter Gallery, is thought to relate to the oil painting and is probably a study for the finished piece.
