A larger, more finished version of this composition was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1935, catalogue number 82. This, and a pencil sketch of this subject are illustrated in Sir A. Munnings, The Second Burst, London, 1951, opposite p.161 and p.190 respectively.

Maurice Codner, the portrait painter, was a friend and neighbour of Munnings. Codner was depicted by Munnings in Maurice Codner sketching at Flatford Mill, of circa 1928, which was exhibited at the 1956 Munnings retrospective exhibition at the the Royal Academy, catalogue number 147.
