Lot Essay

It is likely that the location depicted in the present composition is Druid's Lodge, the Wiltshire stud that belonged to Mr and Mrs James Rank. Munnings painted there in the summer of 1940 when he was commissioned to paint three of the Rank's winners, Southern Hero, Black Speck and Southern Hero. The finished nature of the present painting, indicates the artist having spent more time than usual on a landscape study.
