BERTIUS, Pierre (1565-1629). La geographie Racourcie ... cosmographe du Roy Tres-Crestien en sept livres. Avec des belles cartes geographiques de nouveau tirees et excatement taillez par Iudocus Hondius. Amsterdam: J. Hondius, 1618.
Oblong 8 (120 x 192mm). Engraved title and 221 engraved maps by Jodocus Hondius II. Collation: 8 preliminary leaves, 829pp., 9-page comparative table + final blank. The privilege signed C. Aerssens is printed on the title verso. (Title soiled, creased, and restored at margins, preliminaries dampstained at upper margin, K6 holed with slight loss, S2-D3 with worm trace at inner margin, small worm hole from 3D4 to end slightly affecting text and touching on engraved border of one map.) Modern vellum-backed marbled boards.
This attractive pocket atlas was first published in 1598 at Middelburg by Barent Langenes under the title Caert-thresoor, and with maps by Peter van den Keere and Jodocus Hondius senior. Koeman emphasises its importance in declaring: 'Under the name of this obscure printer of Middelburg falls a series of atlases, easily the best in this bibliography.' The first edition to have the Latin text by Louis XIII's cosmographer, Bertius, appeared in Amsterdam in 1600. 'Bertius has here written a new geographical treatise on the whole world, for which the maps serve as illustrations, contrary to the first editions of 1598 and 1599 where the text explained the maps. At the end Bertius links up with Ptolemy's Geographia where he compares the chapters with the books of Ptolemy.' The first edition with the imprint of Jodocus Hondius II appeared in 1616. Hondius entirely reshaped Bertius's work and newly engraved the maps. 'With the new plates, the work was certainly improved and enjoyed an increasing demand by the public, which had the choice between Mercator's Atlas Minor and Bertius's Tabularum Geographicarum.'
