HIBBERT, Thomas and Henry OVERTON [Enclosure map of the area around Alderley Edge, Cheshire]. 7th September 1636.

Manuscript enclosure map of the heath lands and enclosed lands near Alderley Edge, 870 x 670mm, ink and colours, on vellum. The map untitled but with inscription signed and dated by Henry Overton explaining that the map was done for Mr Leicester, houses and their ownership clearly marked by small drawings, field names and acreage of fields noted, the lands of various farms coloured accordingly, principal tracks and roads marked, elaborate scale bar and dividers, the map oriented to the South. Wide border with compass points. (Lower section of vellum partially detached without loss, some staining and soiling.)

An interesting enclosure map for central Cheshire, showing lands already enclosed and others marked for enclosure for the common heathlands. Thomas Hibbart or Hibberte is known for his work in Derbyshire and particularly for work with Samuel Barton. [see Steer/Bendall H 334]. The Stanley family, who are acknowledged in the title, were important local landowners; they carried out a series of plantations on Alderley Edge in the 16th century, and again in the 18th century.
