SANSON, Nicolas (1600-1667). Introduction a la geographie ou sont la geographie astronomique, qui explique la correspondence du globe terrestre avec la sphere. Amsterdam: Johannes Covens and Cornelis Mortier, [c.1710-1730].

Title printed in red and black, metalcut intials, 67 double-page engraved maps, 64 hand-coloured, 3 folding, and 1 double-page sheet 'Grand theatre de la guerre sur les frontieres de France et d'Allemagne'. (Some maps and text leaves browned, some splits to folds, a few maps with old repairs to verso, some spotting). Green diced half sheep, floral paper boards, manuscript chess-board pasted inside upper cover (worn).
This composite atlas, with the text by Sanson and maps by De l'Isle, Homan, and Covens and Mortier, is typical of Koeman's so-called 'category C' of Covens and Mortier atlases. The French text is similar to that produced by Nicolas de Fer in his Introduction a la geographie (1717) and the maps are impressions from the large stock which Covens and Mortier assembled to satisfy the growing demand among their clients for atlases arranged to order. For such works a general descriptive cartobibliography is not possible and the present copy is rightly considered complete as assembled.
