MORTIER, Cornelis (1699-1783) and Johannes COVENS (b. 1658). Nouveau atlas trs-exact et fort commode pour toutes sortes de personnes, contenant les principales cartes gographiques. Dresss suivant les nouvelles observations de Mrs. de l'Acadmie Royale des Sciences. Amsterdam: Covens & Mortier. [c. 1735].
Tall 8 (255 x 95mm). Double-page engraved title, double-page engraved table, 3 folding letterpress leaves, 4 folding single-page plates of globes, a quadrant and an armillary sphere, double-page folding celestial chart, and 98 double-page folding engraved maps, hand-coloured in outline throughout and neatly numbered in manuscript. (A few short tears at folds.) Contemporary roan-backed boards (rubbed, head of one spine damaged). Provenance: 'Thomas's 1760'; Rowland Holt (early ownership inscriptions).
An attractive copy of the re-issue of Pieter van der Aa's Nouvel atlas, published at Leiden in 1714, here with the name of Pieter van der Aa substituted by that of Covens & Mortier. The three larger scale maps of Holland, 46a, 46b, and 46c, are included. While the countries of Europe form the principal part of this very decorative atlas, it starts with a world map and concludes with 15 maps of Asia, Africa and America. Koeman II. C & M 13. (2)
