UGHI, Ludovico. Iconografia della citt di Venezia. [Venice]: Ludovico Furlanetto, 1729 [but c.1779].
Engraved wall map of Venice printed on seven sheets (of eight), each approx. 669 x 460mm with upper and lower banners printed on three sheets approx. 550 x 483mm and 390 x 668mm and smaller, as issued, and side banners on two sheets approx. 695 x 500mm. The title set in a decorated baroque cartouche, compass rose with inset four inset wind-heads and sixteen inset cardinal points, decorated scale-bar surmounted by the arms of Doge Aloysio Mocenico, epigram in scrolled cartouche supported by a putto, and allegory of Venice triumphant, sitting on the lion of St Mark and surrounded by putti, sea gods, and tritons. (Lower left sheet of map lacking, some edges frayed, minor discolouration on side banners, tear to lower margin of one sheet).
A attractive copy of the second state of this important orthographic view of Venice. According to Schultz, Furlanetto acquired the plates sometime before 1779. By 1779 they were listed as part of his stock in a application for a blanket privilege on his entire production. The second state differs from the first in two respects only: the first state was etched and bears the imprint 'Apresso Giuseppe Baroni S. Giuliano'. Nothing is known of the etcher of the first state, whilst Baroni was prominent for founding, with six other Venetian printmakers, a guild of incisori complete with its own shop selling the members' works. The 'annotationi' describe the city, the parishes, the churches, the hospitals, public transport, as well as give information about features of aristic and architectural interest; the side banners provide views of the principal edifices. Schultz 117; Gallo 41.
