HOWELL, Reading. [A Map of Pennsylvania. Philadelphia: 1791].
Engraved map by J. Trenchard on two sheets joined, 495 x 735mm. The map showing the inland navigation from Philadelphia to Lake Erie, county towns, farms, forges and mills, roads and 'portages', as well as prospective roads, compass rose, scale-bar, graticule border. (Small tear at lower margin, some light discolouration at join.)
A FINE IMPRESSION OF THE FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST PRINTED MAP OF PENNSYLVANIA PUBLISHED AFTER INDEPENDENCE, and the first to show the full extent of the state. The inscription at the lower right reads, 'To the Legislature and the Governor of Pennsylvania this map is respectfully inscribed by Reading Howell'. This map was drawn up to show the extensive internal improvements that had taken place since the Revolution, in particular those relating to roads and inlnd navigation. In the following year, 1792, Howell published his large wall map of Pennsylvania, based on the same surveys. Howell's maps remained fundamental sources for Pennsylvania until the publication of Melish's map of the State in 1822. Ristow American Maps and Mapmakers pp. 108-110.
