A fine comprehensive map of Tokyo as it was after two-and-a-half centuries of isolationist policies and before the abolition of the Shogunate after 1868 and the Street Improvement Act of 1888. Principal residences and the palace of the Shogun are indicated with the emblems of the families, and other properties are named, as are many of the owners and residents. The compass rose includes directions to the major areas of Tokyo and also serves as Chinese zodiac wheel. Tokyo was known as Yedo until the transfer of the Imperial court from Kioto following the abolition of the Shogunate, after which date the city underwent massive expansion.
