2 (517 x 363mm). Mounted on guards throughout. Title-page with engraved vignette, 51 hand-coloured double-page engraved maps, 8 letterpress tables, 2 hand-coloured, and 2 engraved plates. (Title-page with some very light soiling to fore-edge.) Contemporary polished half calf (discreetly rebacked retaining original backstrip, corners lightly bumped).
A fine copy of Buchon's version of Carey and Lea's important American Atlas, first published in Philadelphia in 1822 with 46 maps. The atlas comprises 34 maps of North America, most of individual states, including Washington D.C., and 17 maps of Central and South America and the West Indies. The majority of the maps are set within explanatory letterpress text borders. Philips, Atlases 1176.
