Engraved wall map, hand-coloured in outline, on four sheets joined, overall 1000 x 1240mm, the map mounted on linen on rollers at upper and lower margins. Decorative title, 3 inset tables, 2 inset maps, the map showing the whole of the United States and the indian territories as far west as the 59 meridian, graticule border, surrounded by 32 plans of towns and their environs, the whole within an elaborate, decorative border with the American eagle astride the official seal of the Union in each corner. (Some discolouration, old creases, a few small areas of loss.)
FIRST EDITION of one of the most splendid American wall maps of the period. Subsequent editions appeared in 1846 and 1847, and the publisher, Mitchell, is known for several other important wall maps of America. This map was produced while Frmont was undertaking his exploratory surveying work in the West and Northwest, and presents a portrait of the United States before the great Westward emmigrations and before the Mexican war of 1848. The Western-most 'states' depicted here are Texas and the Indian territories of the Dacotah, Sioux, Iowa, Chippewa, Pottawatomee, Pawnee, Cherokee, and Choctaw Indians. The tables list population by county, cities in size order (New York, the largest in the Union has a mere 312,000 people), and population by ethnic group.
