COLTON, Joseph Hutchinson (1800-1893). Map of the United States of America, The British Provinces, Mexico and the West Indies Showing the Country from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. New York: 1854.

Hand-coloured engraved wallmap on four sheets joined, overall 1335 x 1520mm, linen-backed and mounted on contemporary wooden rollers. Decorative title, inset maps of Newfoundland, the South East part of the West Indies, and central America, tables of statistics and distances, graticule, the map set within a decorative engraved floral trellis-work border with rosettes at corners. (Some light rubbing, dampstaining and soiling, partially detached from roller at lower right.)

A large and comprehensive wall map and 'one of the best and most up-to-date [for the United States] that appeared during this period' (Wheat). It is particularly important for its treatment of the American West, which had undergone significant changes in geography since the Mexican war of 1848 and the Compromise of 1850. The new boundaries of Texas. Utah, New Mexico, and the new state of California, which had been formed in the division of Mexican territories in the Great Basin and the Southwest are delineated here, as is the territory between the United States and Mexico which would be settled in the Gadsden purchase of 1854 and Washington Territory (established 1853). The Mormon colony of San Bernardino, California, is included as well as the Sierra diggings further north. Wheat Mapping the Transmissippi West, 799.
