The Iconographie Ornithologique was published in 12 parts, July 1845 to November 1848, each part with 6 plates and corresponding text. The plates, intended to supplement both Buffon (1770-83) and Temminck (1820-39), are highly praised by Wood and Zimmer alike; 24 are after Alphonse Prvost and 48 after Paul Louis Oudart, who was the official painter of the Musum d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris.
