DONOVAN, Edward (1768-1837). The Natural History of British Birds. London: for the author and for F. and C. Rivington, 1794-[1798].
5 parts (of 10) in 2 volumes, 8 (235 x 142mm). 124 hand-coloured engraved plates. (Some light spotting and staining to only a few plates and leaves.) Contemporary red morocco gilt, gilt and gauffered edges (upper cover of vol. I stained and rubbed at lower edge, corners bumped). Provenance: Thomas Meynell (bookplate); J. F. Symons-Jeune (bookplate). FIRST EDITION. The first 5 parts appeared sometime before the rest and were frequently bound as though complete. While the title-pages for parts I and II have been retained, the other titles have not been bound in, presumably in order to make the series of plates continuous. Fine Bird Books 72; Mullens and Swan p.73; Nissen IVB 257; Wood p. 322.
SYME, Patrick (1774-1845). A Treatise on British Song-Birds. Edinburgh: John Anderson and London: Simpkin & Marshall, 1823. 8 (225 x 145mm). Half-title, 15 engraved plates by Lizars after R. Scott, hand-coloured by Syme, final advertisement leaf. (Offsetting onto text.) Modern green half morocco gilt, uncut. Provenance: Alan Francis Brooke; H. C. Drayton (bookplates removed from the previous binding). Nissen IVB 920; Zimmer p. 621. (3)
