GODMAN, Frederick du Cane (1834-1919). A Monograph of the Petrels London: Witherby, 1907-1910.

4 (328 x 251mm). Title in red and black half title, 106 hand-coloured lithographic plates, most after J. G. Keulemans printed by Hanhart and the Mintern Brothers, a few after H. Grnvold printed by Witherby. (Plate 102 with upper left-hand corner torn away, preceding text leaf similarly affected.) Contemporary red half morocco gilt, t.e.g. Provenance: Allan Francis Brooke (armorial bookplate).

Godman's famous monograph on the Order Tubinares was limited to 250 copies, this number 30, the work published in 5 parts from December, 1907, to May, 1910. Osbert Salvin completed the section on Tubinares in volume XXV of the Catalogue of the birds in the British Museum, and had intended to produce a fuller account. But his death in 1898 meant that it became the task of Godman, who had collected many of his specimens with Salvin, to bring the project to fruition. In his preface, Godman expresses gratitude to 'Dr. Sharpe's talented daughters' for their colouring of the plates and indebtedness to Sharpe who himself died shortly before the date of publication. Anker 163; Nissen IVB 356; Zimmer p. 248.
