Large 2 (545 x 370mm). 47 fine hand-coloured lithgraophic plates, most heightened with gum-arabic, by Gould, William Hart and Henry Constantine Richter, printed by Hullmandel & Walton, Walter or Walter & Cohn. Contemporary green half morocco gilt, covers with broad ruled and tooled border, spine in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in two, the other with decorative flower tool and borders, gilt edges. Provenance: John Riddall (book plate and note on endpaper vol 1 dated 1876).
A FINE COPY of the second, revised and expanded edition. The first edition was published in 1835-1838, but this is essentially a completely new work: the text was re-written, the species figured in the first edition were re-drawn, and it includes 12 new species.
