3 volumes, 4 (314 x 245mm). 135 lithographic and wood-engraved plates, including 101 hand-coloured plates of birds after J. G. Keulemans and J. Smit, and 3 hand-coloured plates of eggs, one double-page. 3 maps, half-title in each volume. (Large folding plate of 'Netting sea-fowl' re-hinged, occasional spotting of text.) Contemporary hard-grained red half morocco and marbled boards (extremities a little rubbed), gilt edges. Provenance: Count of Mantua and Montferrat (ownership signature on title of vol. II).
A periodical work in 14 parts issued at irregular intervals between January 1875 and May 1878, with an unusual variety of illustrations, written principally by Rowley but also including articles by H. E. Dresser, Alfred Newton, O. Salvin, P. L. Sclater, H. Seebohm, R. B. Sharpe and others. The 135 plates not only illustrate species and eggs, but also show habitats and sporting scenes.
