The ornithological section of the great work, edited by the authors, on the flora and fauna of Mexico and Central America, consisting in its entirety of 57 volumes, and published 1879-1915 in 257 parts, 74 of which related to birds. The ornithology included 1413 species and embraced 78 families and 539 genera, all constituing 'an essentially Neotropical' avifauna. The authors obtained the material they needed during their several visits to South America, and aided by other collectors eventually acquired more than 55,000 specimens which they eventually gave to the British Museum. As Salvin died before the completion of volume III, the work was finished by Godman with the assistance of R. B. Sharpe and W. R. Ogilvie-Grant. The 84 plates by Keulemans depict 149 species.
