[BLOUNT, Charles (1654-1693)]. Anima mundi; or, An historical narration of the opinions of the ancients concerning mans soul after this life: according to unenlightened nature. 'Amsterdam' [?London]: 'anno mundi 00000' [?1679].

8 (161 x 112mm). (Title with paper fault slightly affecting imprint.) Contemporary crimson morocco gilt, sides with inner panel of double fillets and dots with fleurons at corners, double fillet outer panel, gilt spine compartments with varied floral ornament and blue calf lettering-piece, gilt edges (spine chipped at head, light rubbing to extremities). Provenance: 'For Sr Robert Cotton present' (gift inscription on front free endpaper); Sir Thoms Cotton Bart His Book Ano 1713 (inscription on front blank); Sr Robert Salusbury Cotton of Cumbermere in the County of Chester Bart (armorial bookplate).
FIRST EDITION. The next three editions were all dated 1679, though the last of these was probably published in 1695. Blount sent a copy of the work to Hobbes, and the free thinking opinions it advances have caused him to be regarded as an early deist. Although reissued, it was denounced by the Bishop of London, and burnt 'by some zealous persons' (see DNB). In view of the fine binding and the gift inscription to Sir Robert Cotton, this is possibly a presentation copy from the author. Wing B3297.
