PIRANESI, Giovanni Battista (1720-1778). Vedute di Roma. [Rome: c.1760s-1770s]

2 (545 x 740mm). 25 etched plates, all but one a contemporary Roman issue, and one engraved portrait of Pope Clement XIV by Domenico Cunego after J.D. Porta dated 1770. (Repaired tears infrequently extending into image, first plate lightly soiled and lower margin reinforced on verso, vertical creases, some light marginal spotting, one plate lightly browned.) Modern brown half morocco.

A good selection of contemporary Roman edition plates, almost all in Hind's third state, with address and price. Piranesi started to issue the plates for the Vedute in 1748; various combinations were issued over the next thirty years. Initially 34 plates were available and by his death in 1778, 135 plates constituted the complete work. Customers, however, in addition to purchasing the complete collection, could also acquire any combination of individual plates. Based on Hind's dating of the first issues of the plates, they range from 1748 to 1769; one plate (Hind 120) is the first Paris edition. The plates contained here are Hind 100, 5, 9, 56, 40, 32, 29, 18, 16, 15, 14, 87, 7, 3, 92, 75, 61, 86, 60, 78, 57, 51, 38, 120, and 4.
