PISTORIUS, Johannes, Nidanus (1546-1608). Artis Cabalisticae, vol. I [all published]. Basel: Sebastian Henricpetri, April 1587.
2 (315 x 203mm). Printer's device on title and on final verso, one woodcut diagram, historiated and ornamental initials. Roman, Hebrew, Greek and italic types. (Slightly browned, neat tear at hinge of first leaf.) Contemporary vellum over thin pasteboard, blind double fillet tooled on sides, title lettered at head of spine. Provenance: Ludovicus Lucius (contemporary inscription on front pastedown); Stevelin Volschow of Pomerania (near-contemporary title inscription, some marginal annotations).
FIRST EDITION of the great compendium of Christian cabalistic literature, compiled by Johannes Pistorius, physician to Jacob, Margrave of Baden-Durlach. It contains Judah Abrabanel's Dialoghi di Amore, Archangelus de Burgonuovo's commentaries on the Conclusiones of Pico della Mirandola, and works by Paulus Ricius, Johann Reuchlin, and Rabbi Joseph. The Artis Cabalisticae was consulted by Milton and therefore the source of his understanding of cabalistic mysticism (Jewish Encyclopedia 13, p.566). A planned second volume containing Jewish cabalistic works was never realised. Quire Mm has 4 leaves and is complete, despite Adams calling for 6 leaves. Adams P-1315; Caillet 8702; Graesse V, 535.
